Firewood Logs

Hampshire's finest firewood. Quality, seasoned logs delivered direct

All firewood produced by Arborworks Ltd originates from renewable and sustainable sources as part of local forestry management programmes. We do not use imported wood. Wherever possible seasoned logs are delivered in mixed loads, providing a balance of heat and flame in an open fire, making the most of the different properties of the various woods.

Seasoning
Green or damp wood does not burn well as it can contain several hundred litres of water per cubic metre. In this state most of the energy in the wood is spent driving the water off, instead of generating heat for your home. For this reason timber for firewood must be seasoned. Traditionally timber is harvested during the winter months and stacked in lengths, called cords, to begin the drying process. This can take up to a year. When we cut our cords into firewood logs they are stored in under cover for a further period. This process is seasoning and it ensures that wood reaches its full potential on burning, releasing maximum energy into your home as heat.

Firewood as fuel
Wood is mankinds oldest form of heat and light and represents a major source of renewable energy with many environmental benefits:
  • Seasoned wood burns very efficiently with very little smoke
  • It is said to be carbon neutral, in that the carbon dioxide released by the wood during combustion does not exceed that used by the tree during it's growth cycle, and can be utilised by other plants
  • Unlike the 'greenhouse gases' produced by fossil fuels, burning wood does not contribute to global warming
  • When harvested from managed sources, wood is renewable and sustainable
  • The industry promotes acctive management of forests and woodlands with benefits to wildlife and the environment

Traditional Poem

Beechwood fires burn bright and clear,
If the logs are kept a year.

Store your beech for Christmastide,
With new holly laid beside.

Chestnut's only good they say,
If for years tis laid away.

Birch and firwood burn too fast,
Blaze too bright and do not last.

Flames from larch will shoot up high,
Dangerously the sparks will fly.

But Ashwood green and Ashwood brown
Are fit for a Queen with a golden crown.

Oaken logs if dry and old,
Keep away the winters cold.

Poplar gives a bitter smoke,
Fills your eyes and makes you choke.

Elmwood burns like churchyard mould,
Even the very flames burn cold.

Hawthorn bakes the sweetest bread,
So it is in Ireland said.

Applewood will scent the room,
Pearwood smells like a flower in bloom.

But Ashwood wet and Ashwood dry,
A King may warm his slippers by.

Splitting cords of beech
Splitting cords for stacking

Net bags of logs on pallets
Net bags of logs on pallets

Cubic metre of logs in net bag
A cubic metre of logs
